Cover Preview: Tobacco Sun

Tobacco Sun by Lorna Hollifield will debut in the summer of 2017. This title follows two sisters from the tobacco fields of the deep south as they navigate different life paths. A tragedy and opportunity for redemption brings them back together - but will life ever be the same?

Working on this book has been such a pleasurable experience. It's one of those reads that you have to remind yourself you're editing, or else you get lost in the prose and the story. The next thing you know, you're forty pages down with no notes!

When creating the cover proofs, the author had a specific color palette in mind to set the stage for the 1940s on first look. We also needed to evoke a cycle of emotion while also representing the tobacco fields that are so important to the development of the characters.

My first thought was to create a vintage postcard - one sister remains in Tobbacoville, North Carolina,  while the other finds the bright lights of Hollywood to be on her side. It was possible they would communicate by snail mail and postcards were a sense of pride to those who traveled or received small notes from family. A quick jaunt through any antique store will show this in their baskets of old mail.

I also wanted to create some options that utilized modern trends to throw some options in the mix. This resulted in the row of circles that each showcase a different piece of the story, as well as the cover with the triangles. The angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees and 180 degrees is also how you describe someone making a complete change. Would that be too much?

Then, to meet the author's request, we created the cover with the silhouette filled with tobacco leaves and the tobacco field with the title on dried leaves.

When the series was handed over, we took a collective deep sigh. This was, hands down, one of the most beautiful proof series we have created for an author. We fell in love with each and every option. How do you choose?

Lorna selected her pick, asked for a few small adjustments, and approved the final design. We will reveal the final design on May 7th, 2016 via Facebook (click on the link to join the event). We will reveal the final design, here on our blog and website, on May 8th, 2016.
