IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THE INDUSTRY
Until now, unless you had a large platform and millions of followers, you had to write your book prior to submitting to publishers. Even then, unless you wrote nonfiction, the chances of getting a publishing deal were slim.
The Workshop at Pen Name Publishing changes this.
``If a story is in you, it has got to come out.``
The concept of the The Workshop is simple. We take unpublished authors who have yet to write their book and coach them through the writing process in our online classroom. When the writing has been completed, we work with the authors on correcting their first draft, understanding how to self-edit, fact check, investigate the paths of their characters, plots, and sub-plots. Finished manuscripts then move in to production with our team of editors, designers, and formatters.
Authors will exit the novel writing classes with a published book. Along the way, they will guest write blogs, participate in live online roundtables, and learn how to build their author platform while writing a book - something most authors neglect, waiting instead until their book is published to start building their platform.
Make no mistake: this is an intense program.
Authors who enter The Workshop will be expected to meet specific deadlines related to each stage of the process. Failure to meet deadlines or participate in promotional activities will result in termination of their position in the program.
How do I know if it's right for me?
You have an idea that you've been wanting to write. There's a story that builds itself constantly playing in your mind, and you know people will love this book.
You just have to write it, but you aren't sure where to start. Or maybe you know where to start, but you want to make sure your work meets your expectations. Or maybe you need someone to hold you accountable and help you with questions you have along the way.
The Workshop is NOT for you if:
- You cannot meet deadlines
- You are not interested in working with other authors
- You don't want to discuss your writing
- You have no interest in learning how to build an author platform
What do I get as an author in The Workshop?
You come to us as a new author without a finished manuscript. We coach you in the writing process, help you find YOUR voice, and create the best work possible.
While you are writing, we start teaching you how to build your brand and author platform, while simultaneously building the audience around your book.
Once the writing portion is completed, we send you off to our editing team to tidy up your manuscript for the market, we design your cover according to your wishes, format your book for print and digital formats, and set your launch.
You get a fully produced and professional book without having to pay extreme fees to a vanity press, and you get the unique opportunity of writing your manuscript with a team of professional mentors. Best of all, you get a built in support team in our publishing house and the authors you are writing with.
To help with your continued brand building, we will give you a personal author platform plan based on your goals, help you set up your author website, and provide graphics for your social media accounts.
We will help you with media and interviews, getting book reviews, pre-orders, blog and social media tours, and a strong buzz around your launch. We will send press releases to appropriate media outlets and utilize industry channels for placing your book in front of libraries, book stores, and professional reviewers.
All of our authors get continued access to courses on building author platforms, using social media, and increasing visibility though a partnership with Happy Writing.
Authors are paid monthly and retain 50% of all royalties.
How does this work?
The Workshop is not easy. This is an intense program that will span 12 to 18 months, and authors that do not meet deadlines will be dropped from the program.
We will spend one month on plotting, researching, pre-writing development, and organizing our writing process.
Next, we write our novels over the course of three months. All authors will be paired with an accountability partner in their genre. While writing, we will start the process of building author websites and basic social media accounts as needed. Authors will also participate in live YouTube roundtables discussing the writing process, the program, and their experience.
After the three months of writing the first draft, we will spend two months editing the first draft for continuity, proper development, plot holes, etc. Authors will beta read two other participants' manuscripts during this stage and we'll start developing how to give and receive criticism in the publishing industry.
Finally, six months in, we will turn the manuscripts over to our production team. While our team cleans up the editing, produces the cover, and formats the manuscript, you'll be working on your social media, preparing your launch team, and developing your fan base with our marketing gurus.
When the production is complete, we assign your ISBN, your copyright, and your launch date.
What genres do you publish?
In the workshop, we publish all fiction genres.
As a general rule of thumb, we do not publish non-fiction that require permissions, heavy fact checking, politics, religion, or may contain material we deem to be too controversial or against or policies of being inclusive to all authors.
Is my writing protected in The Workshop?
Yes. The moment you start to write in the workshop, your work is YOUR WORK.
All authors sign confidentiality agreements prior to participating. During the workshops, we'll talk about the process and what you're doing in author roundtables for YouTube. We'll say enough to build excitement, but not so much that it's given away.
Any author in the program found in violation of the confidentiality agreement, or who violates your personal work copyright until we file your final copyright, will be dropped immediately.
All of our courses are protected under copyright, and all of our processes will fall under a standard Non Disclosure agreement.
How much do you influence the writing?
Your book is just that - YOUR BOOK.
What matters is developing YOUR unique voice and staying true to you. We don't want cookie cutter novels and we are NOT going to tell you what to write.
We won't name your characters, we won't write your passages, we won't do your research. We also won't tolerate authors asking other authors to do any of these. This is a program for unknown authors who want to take their potential seriously.
You write your book, in your voice, along your lines. We are there to steer you with formatting the story, placement of key points, knowing when to include key details, when to cut pieces that aren't that important, how to introduce characters, write a killer intro, etc.
Where is my book sold?
We use the Ingram network. PNPExpress books are available in 170 countries through 10,000 retail outlets online.
PNPExpress authors can work with local bookstores to place their books, but we do not actively place these titles in brick and mortar locations.
What do I pay?
For the course and publishing? NOTHING.
Our first cohort will also have no application fee. In the future, there will be a $25 application fee to help offset our coaching and course fees, and to make sure applicants are serious. But, if you can find a six month novel writing class with one to one coaching for $25, we'll waive your fee!
We never charge for editing, cover design, formatting, provided marketing materials, review outreach, copyright, ISBN, distribution, or printing of the books.
What rights do I keep?
We are contracted for worldwide English language rights for print and digital publishing.
We take contractual permission to publish your manuscript in English through digital and print distribution channels. You can cancel your contract two years after publishing with the option to purchase your cover art.
You retain all subsidiary rights such as: licensing and merchandising, movie, foreign translation, television, and audio.
