WELCOME TO EXPRESS PUBLISHING
You're independent. You want to control your brand. You don't want to self publish, but you want an option that doesn't involve months of querying or paying for a vanity press. You want a team. You want a coach. You want a partner. You want control.
We are now taking submissions for PNPExpress and will begin publishing manuscripts as early as February 1, 2018.
``If a story is in you, it has got to come out.``
Welcome to PNPExpress - a new style of publishing for a new class of authors. Express publishing is simple, straightforward, and without gimmicks. This option is for authors who are independent, entrepreneurial, want minimum contact, and full control over their branding, outreach, and post-publishing process. Express publishing is for an author who doesn't want to self-publish, doesn't want to pay heavy fees to a vanity press, and doesn't want to be micromanaged by a publisher telling them what to do, how to do it, and what their final book will look like.
Authors work hard to write their manuscripts. While we know their journey has only just begun, we also feel that publishing needs to change. We want to shake things up, change the game, and create a bridge between traditional, hybrid, and self publishing.
Are you ready for the revolution that is PNPExpress?
How do I know if it's right for me?
PNPExpress is NOT right for every author. The PNPExpress author is extremely independent, doesn't want their hands held, their brand managed, or their days structured around the needs of a publisher. While this sounds great in theory, it means the PNPExpress author needs to be extremely entrepreneurial, manage their author platform with precision, and understand that they are in charge of their results. Yes, the PNPExpress author can be part of a team and have other authors they can chat with about strategy, successes, tips, and tricks, but it is up to them how active they want to be within our group. We will give the author guidance and suggestions, but we do not do major marketing campaigns, review outreach campaigns, etc.
What do I get as a PNPExpress Author?
You get a fully produced and professional book without having to pay extreme fees to a vanity press. We file your copyright and assign your ISBNs. Your book will be listed in the PNPExpress section of our website, will be featured in our weekly PNPExpress releases newsletter, and mentioned on our Pen Name Publishing social media accounts during your launch day.
To help with your marketing, we will give you a plan based on your goals that you can choose to execute or not, some basic graphic marketing materials including teasers and a 3-D mockup featuring your cover. All of our authors get access to courses on building author platforms, using social media, and increasing visibility though a partnership with Happy Writing.
You get paid monthly and you retain 75% of all retailer paid royalties.
How does this work?
PNPExpress is simple, quick, and no frills. You submit your finished, polished, and edited manuscript via our PNPExpress submission form. We will assess your book's editing to make sure it is market ready and decide if we are willing to publish your book as eBook only or as eBook and print editions. Once your contract is signed, we format your book and deliver three cover proofs for you to choose from. Once you have approved your covers and the formatting of your book, we file your copyright, assign your ISBNs and your release date, give you some basic graphic design elements to get you started, and welcome you in to our PNPExpress Author Slack group.
Your book can go from finished manuscript to on the market in as little as one week. The best part is that you never have to spend a dime to get your book published.
What genres do you publish?
In PNPExpress, we publish all fiction genres with the exception of picture books and graphic novels.
As a general rule of thumb, we do not publish non-fiction that require permissions, heavy fact checking, politics, religion, or may contain material we deem to be too controversial or against or policies of being inclusive to all authors.
How long does it take?
Submissions can take 2-3 weeks for us to process depending on the volume of manuscript intake. Once a contract is signed, we can get you on the market as quickly as one week. When we offer you a contract, we will give you three dates to choose from. After you pick your date, we will give you a pre-launch marketing plan template that fits the time frame you have elected for your launch.
How do I submit?
Make sure your manuscript is ready - PNPExpress requires a market ready, clean, edited manuscript. If you're ready, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. In your submission, include your website, social media information, publishing history, why you feel Express Publishing is the best fit for you, and what you hope to achieve with your book. Attach your manuscript in .pdf or .doc format.
Where is my book sold?
We use the Ingram network. PNPExpress books are available in 170 countries through 10,000 retail outlets online.
PNPExpress authors can work with local bookstores to place their books, but we do not actively place these titles in brick and mortar locations.
What do I pay?
That's what is so great about PNPExpress - you don't pay anything.
A publisher should pay you. We do take a small percentage of royalties to cover our expenses, but this also helps us be accountable for your success. If you feel you want extra help with website design, graphic design work, social media content creation, blog creation, or extra marketing work, you can contact one of our experienced Pen Name Publishing team members. Occasionally, our standard publishing team members may run in-house discounts for PNPExpress authors, but you are never required to purchase anything or sold packages.
PNPExpress is extremely basic and bare bones publishing. We don't hide this, we don't cover this, and we don't try to dress it up into something it isn't. Your success is in your hands, but you should be able to meet your goals without starting out at a deficit.
What rights do I keep?
You keep all of your rights.
We take contractual permission to publish your manuscript in English through digital and print distribution channels. You can cancel your contract at any time with the option to purchase your cover and interior formatting.
You retain all subsidiary rights such as: licensing and merchandising, movie, foreign translation, television, and audio.
